Are You In Bikini Shape?

August is typically the month that most people head off for their big summer vacation. If you’ve spent the last few months indulging in backyard BBQs and poolside margaritas, there is still time to get into bikini shape by making a few easy changes to your diet and workout routine and by doing one of your favorite things… hitting the spa!

Burn More Calories!

*In addition to your usual fitness activities and workout routines, consider making these small changes to your daily routine to burn off a few more calories each day:

*Walk around your house or office when you are chatting on the phone with your girlfriend or on a conference call for work instead of sitting in a chair. Every step counts.

*Take the stairs instead of the elevator… always!

*Stop looking for that perfect parking space. Instead, purposely park farther away so you have more steps in your day. If that means, leaving earlier to do errands, then do it!

*Multi-Task: Watch your favorite TV show or movie while doing crunches, lunges, planks, or jumping jacks.

Replace the Basics!

Diets come and go, but making a few simple substitutions to your regular diet can really make a difference.

  • Replace sugar with applesauce when you’re baking.
  • Go for nuts instead of croutons for that extra crunch you want in your salad.
  • Opt for non-fat plain Greek yogurt instead of sour cream. It tastes the same with much less guilt!
  • Swap out rice for quinoa.
  • Try chia seeds instead of breadcrumbs.
  • Skip the whole milk and try almond or soymilk.

Hit the Spa!

Now for the fun part! Aside from being a great way to treat yourself, think of the spa as also the go-to place to get yourself in bikini shape and to care for your skin from summer fun in the sun! Consider these treatments…

  • Slimming wraps can help you lose few inches and reduce the appearance of cellulite so you look your best in that bikini!
  • Detox wraps also help to rid your body of toxins from your favorite summer cocktails, such as margaritas, daiquiris, and Mai Tai’s!
  • Did you get too much sun this summer? Try a hydrating or cooling facial for your over-exposed skin.
  • Exfoliating body scrubs are a great way to either prep your skin for a spray tan or scrub off the dry skin after a summer of sun.
  • Mani/Pedi – Of course a nice bright summer color on your fingertips or toes is the accessory for your vacation, beach, or pool attire. And, don’t forget to take care of your “beach feet” with a good exfoliating foot treatment.

Celebrate Friendship Day!

As if we need a special day to celebrate all of our gal pals, buddies, besties, and BFFs in our lives, August 3, 2014 is a date dedicated just to that.  This celebration actually dates back to 1919 thanks to Hallmark cards. So if you missed out time to do a Belated “Friendship Day” Date!

friends But over the years the idea waned a bit and until 1998 when Winnie the Pooh, of all characters, was named the world’s Ambassador of Friendship by the United Nations and they declared July 30 as International Friendship Day. So, while some countries celebrate it the last week of July, most other countries still deem the first Sunday of August as the original Friendship Day.

Whatever the day, it’s a great time to think cherish your friends, think about just what makes a great friend, and, of course, plan some spa time with your BFF!

So what makes a great friend? A truly fantastic friend does seven these fabulous things…

Forgives: No one’s perfect. We all mess up once in a while. What’s important is how you handle the mistakes. The two most important sentences to get through life’s little mishaps are: “I’m sorry” and “I forgive you.” Almost any friendship can be mended with those little words. It’s just as important to forgive as it is to be forgiven.

Respects: R-E-S-P-E-C-T! Our friends might not always agree with our choices, but they should at least respect that they are our choices for our reasons – and vice versa. Without respect, there can’t be a true foundation for friendship. The same goes for how we treat others. As Albert Einstein said, “I speak to everyone in the same way, whether he is the garbage man or the president of the university.”

Inspires: Be inspiring and surround yourself with people who inspire you. Oprah Winfrey once said, “Surround yourself with only people who are going to lift you higher.” Wise words from a wise woman.

Enjoys: Good friends need to enjoy each other’s company. Have fun, laugh, get silly, be goofy, and let your hair down! A good belly laugh goes a long way. Having a friend who makes you laugh and shares your sense of humor – and laughs at your jokes even if they’re not so funny- is a good friend indeed!

Never judges: As the late Maya Angelou, who passed away this May, famously once said, “The most called-upon prerequisite of a friend is an accessible ear.” Sometimes we just need someone to sit and listen to us vent, cry, rant and rave without chiming in with judgment, opinions, or advice. Never judge; just listen with love, compassion, and empathy.

Drives you: No, we’re not talking about being your personal chauffeur (though that would be nice). We mean a true friend drives you to be the best you can be, drives you to pick yourself up when you are down, and drives you to follow your dreams. And, well, on second thought, maybe she also does drive you home if you had one too many glasses of wine on a girls’ night out!

Spas! Above all, a good friend knows that the word “spa” is indeed a verb (even if Webster’s Dictionary doesn’t quite know it as one yet!) and she knows that “spa-ing” together is something that great friendships are made of!

Celebrate your friendship with your BFF, your sister, or your mom! Call us today 520.795.3341 to reserve your spa appointments or reserve online!

Here Comes the Sun…Now Watch Out!

Here Comes the Sun…Now Watch Out!

Since July is UV Safety Month, now is a great time to separate fact from fiction about sun protection. We might think we know everything about defending our skin against the sun’s damaging rays, but let’s put that knowledge to the test with a little game fact or fiction!

woman-sunSunscreens with SPF 100 are twice as strong as those with SPF 50: Fiction

The breakdown goes like this: SPF 15 protects you against 93% of UVB rays. SPF 30 is 97%, SPF 50 is 98%, and SPF 100 is roughly 99%, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. So, it’s not even close to being twice as strong!

Apply sunscreen all over your body before getting dressed: Fact

It might sound strange to grease up before getting dressed, but most clothing – especially the more lightweight fashions of summer – do not protect your entire body from the sun’s damaging rays. In fact, your average white T-shirt only has an SPF value of about 7, and if it gets wet, it’s even lower, according to the Skin Cancer Foundation. So, it’s important to apply sunscreen all over your body – even where the sun don’t shine – before getting dressed for the day!

If you get a base tan, you won’t burn: Fiction

Any sign of color or discoloration to the natural color of your skin is actually not a good thing. The more sun you get – even if you don’t burn – the greater your chances of developing melanoma. Getting a base tan doesn’t even ensure that you won’t soon burn. But, if you’re looking for that bronzed look for summer, a spray tan or a self-tanning lotion is your healthiest choice. Book your spray tan with us today!

Apply sunscreen 15 minutes before sun exposure and re-apply every 2 hours: Fact

Yes. This age-old rule is remains true. You want to give the sunscreen time to fully absorb into your skin before going outside. This includes before getting into your car as well because your car windows – even if they are tinted – don’t protect you from the sun’s rays. When you are out and about, you really can’t over-apply sunscreen, but the general rule is still every two hours. Most water-resistant sunscreens, however, should be re-applied every 80 minutes. When in doubt – reapply and follow the bottle’s instructions.

One sunscreen does it all: Fiction

There are different types of sunscreens for the different types of skin on your body, such as sensitive formulas for your face, a more balmy consistency for your lips, and waterproof for your body. There are also water-resistant and sports formulas if you plan to head into the beach or pool or get sweaty for a work-out. It’s a great idea to stock up on a variety of sunscreens for you and your family’s needs. And, don’t forget to apply it everywhere- from your earlobes to your toes!

Getting a tan can zap your zits away: Fiction

People think that the sun dries up zits, but really it can cause a buildup of dead skin cells that can clog pours more. The best way to treat zits is to treat your skin better by coming in for regular facials and using exfoliating and deep cleansing products at home. Book your facial today and ask our aesthetician for skin care products for your at-home use.

EveryBody Deserves a Massage!

woman-massage “EveryBody Deserves a Massage,” which is a nationwide event for massage therapists coast to coast created by the Associated Bodywork & Massage Professionals organization. Well, naturally, we could not agree more that everyone not only deserves to treat himself or herself to a rubdown regularly, but their mind, body, and spirit actually needs it. Here are 10 reasons why you should book your massage today!

De-Stress: The simplest benefit of getting a massage of any kind (but especially Swedish, aromatherapy, or hot stone massage) is to zone out, relax, and unwind. With relaxing music setting the mood, a soothing scent in the air, and healing hands melting your troubles away, all of your stress and worries disappear.

Be Happy: Massage is also known to help with depression and anxiety. Aside from the fact that when we are relaxed, we naturally have less negative feelings of any kind, massage is also known to reduce the levels of the stress hormone cortisol. It’s also known to boost what is referred to as the “happy hormones” of serotonin and dopamine.

Sore No More: Before popping a pain reliever for the sore, stiff, or aching muscles from gardening, sitting at your computer too long, or that intense work out you just endured, try a nice, long massage instead. Massage therapy gets to the root of your aches and pains by relaxing the tense muscles, encouraging blood flow, and increasing flexibility.

Detox: When a massage therapist works out the knots in your muscles, they are stimulating the flow of toxic waste from your muscles, tissues, and organs. It also helps your overall health and digestion. It’s especially effective with deep tissue and sports massage, but any type of massage, including the more relaxing massages like Swedish, will also help to detoxify the body. And, don’t forget – always drink lots of water before and especially after a massage!

Move It: If you’re sick of getting that tingly feeling in your hands and feet then massage can help with that too. The pressure of massage helps get blood flowing throughout your body to improve circulation, which improves overall health and body function.

Limber Up: Not everyone can touch their toes or do a perfect Downward Facing Dog, but massage can certainly help get us closer to that. Massage helps increase our flexibility by working our muscles, connective tissues, and tendons to increase our range of motion and fluidity.

Fight That Cold: Studies have shown that regular massage helps to boost your white blood cell count, which helps strengthen the immune system to let your body fight off colds and diseases.

Get More ZZZs: Anyone who has ever fallen asleep on the massage table knows exactly how a great massage can knock you out. Well, even if you don’t fall asleep instantly, the sleepy-time affect will last until you get home. If you have trouble sleeping, book our last appointment of the day and head straight home for a good night’s sleep!

If you need one more reason to get a massage it’s this – It just feels GOOD! Call today to book a massage appointment with us.

Happy Father’s Day! Is Your Dad or Husband a Spa Virgin?

Men are finally realizing that the spa isn’t just a place for their wife or girlfriend to get their nails done. It’s a place of health and wellness for them too, and not only are more men coming in for the obvious sports or deep tissue massage, but there is an increase in men getting facials and MAN-icures as well. According to the International Spa Association, men now make up approximately one third of all spa-goers. Is your dad or husband one of them? If he’s a spa virgin and a bit apprehensive to take the leap, here are a few good ways to convince him into a trip to the spa…

Gift Him! As they say, ‘If you build it, they will come.’ Well, in the case of a spa-fearing guy – ‘If you gift him, he better come!’ It’s a safe bet that if you give dear ol’ dad a gift card to the spa and explain to him how relaxing it will be, he probably won’t want to offend you by not going. Better yet, create a special Father’s Day package to show him how much you really care about his wellness, or go for the gold and gift him a spa membership to help him de-stress all year long. Call today to purchase his Father’s Day gift!

Beard Care: Chances are your dad or husband probably thinks that facials are just for women. More men are realizing that exfoliating dead skin helps to expose their beard’s hair follicles, which reduces ingrown hairs and is a great primer for a good, close shave. Of course, a good exfoliating facial will also make his skin look cleaner and smoother, and yes, younger! Check out our retail section for an exfoliating scrub and other skincare products for the man in your life.

Fungus Fighters: When talking dad into getting his feet and hands pampered, it might be a good idea to actually stay away from terms like “mani-pedi” and even “pampered.” Dad needs to know that manicures and pedicures are not just for the girls, nor are they a “beauty” treatment. It’s, more importantly, about the health of your skin and nails. If you explain to your dad that MAN-icures and pedicures are just another way to be a well-groomed man, he might be more likely to come in to get his digits done. Explain to dad the importance that manicures make him more presentable (and that everyone loves a soft hand) and pedicures help fight off fungus infections, ingrown nails, and that ugly yellow tint you seen on unkempt toes.

Stress Relief: Statistically, stress is a major contributor to many diseases and medical conditions including heart disease, high blood pressure, asthma, headaches, and depression. Remind dad that going to the spa – even just to soak in the Jacuzzi or sit in the sauna or steam room for 20 minutes – is a great way to relieve stress, relax, and decompress from a long hard workweek.

Detox Time: It’s impossible to avoid getting toxins into our system, whether it’s environmental or the food, drinks, and medications we take. Everyone needs to detox on a regular basis no matter how healthy they are. Let dad know that the spa is a great place for flushing the bad stuff from his system. He can choose from simply sitting in a sauna or steam room to sweat out the toxins that build up in our system or he can indulge in a detox wrap or detoxifying facial. Remind him that both saunas and steam rooms also help relax any stiff or sore muscles and relieve aches and pains.

So, for this Father’s Day, educate your father or husband on the health, wellness, and relaxation benefits of the spa! Treat him to a treatment, a full day, or sign him up for a yearly membership now!

Bonus Recipe! Memorial Day (May 26)

Memorial Day (May 26): Red, White & Blue Fruit Cups: Combine 1-cup each of strawberries (de-stemmed and chopped) and blueberries (make sure you have equal amounts of blue and red) and then drizzle clover honey over the berries lightly. Top the treat with your favorite whipped cream for the white of this Red, White & Blue dessert! blueberriesAdd a little crunch with crushed pignolias (pine nuts) sprinkled on top.
