Give Thanks by Helping Others


The holidays are here. What a hectic time of year! But, aren’t you thankful to have the means to enjoy it? You have your health, your friends, and your family. In the midst of giving thanks this Thanksgiving, take time to remember those who are less fortunate than you. As a way of showing how thankful you are for all that you have, wouldn’t it be nice to help someone in need?

November is National Alzheimer’s Disease Month, National Adoption Month, National AIDS Awareness Month, Lung Cancer Awareness Month, and Epilepsy Awareness Month. What an appropriate time to choose a charity to support and help someone else! After all, isn’t that what Thanksgiving is all about?

Whether you volunteer your time, or donate funds to a cause in need, providing assistance to charities is a thoughtful way of giving thanks.

Turkey Club Wrap

1/2 ripe avocado, seeded

1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice

Dash of ground red pepper

1 small garlic clove, minced

2 (2-ounce) low-carb, low-fat sandwich wraps (such as California Lavash)

4 ounces sliced leftover Thanksgiving turkey

4 (1/4-inch) slices tomato

1/2 cup thinly vertically sliced red onion

1 cup shredded romaine lettuce

4 center-cut bacon slices, cooked

(Adjust measurements according to number of people)




  1. Scoop pulp from avocado. Place in a bowl. Add lemon juice, pepper, and garlic.

Mix together with a fork to desired consistency.

  1. Spread avocado mixture evenly over wraps. Layer 2 ounces turkey, 2 tomato slices,

1/4 cup onion, 1/2 cup lettuce, and 2 bacon slices on each wrap. Roll up.

Cut wraps in half. Secure with wooden picks. Serve immediately.

Healthy Tip: Avocados are loaded with vitamins B6, C, K, and folate, and are also a great

source of fiber and potassium.




Pumpkin Soup



2 tablespoons butter

1 medium onion, finely chopped, about 1/2 cup

3 cups vegetable broth

1 (15 ounce) can pumpkin

1 1/2 cups skim milk

2 tablespoons prepared polenta, creamy

1 tablespoon honey

1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/4-1/2 teaspoon ground cardamom

1/4 teaspoon nutmeg

1 pinch salt and pepper





  1. Melt butter in a skillet over medium heat.
  1. Cook chopped onions until soft and golden brown.
  1. Heat the broth in a good-sized pot, add pumpkin slowly, and bring to a partial boil.
  1. Stir in onions, milk, polenta, honey, cinnamon, cardamom, nutmeg, salt, and pepper (pressed garlic might be suitable at this time).
  1. Make sure that the ingredients do not clump but are spread throughout the soup.
  1. Cook for about 5 minutes or longer until all ingredients have been thoroughly mixed and dissolved and so the soup is thoroughly heated.
  1. If at this point it seems chunkier or thicker than desired; use an immersion blender or a regular one to liquefy the soup and blend in the onions.
  1. Serve warm with pieces of bread if desired

Serves 6-8

With the celebration of Halloween this month, parents may be concerned about allowing their children to eat the large amounts of candy they acquire when trick-or-treating. We suggest setting boundaries to how much your children can eat on Halloween night…perhaps they can indulge a bit. After that, set a limit (maybe 1-2 pieces) of the amount of candy they can have each day forward. And be sure to continue packing them healthy lunches with fruit when they head off to school to keep them on their healthy track.

Don’t get frustrated during the holidays this year. Adjust your eating habits and get on the path to a healthier, more enjoyable lifestyle. Your body will thank you!

Wild Mushroom Tartlets


  • 375g block all-butter Puff Pastry
  • Flour, for dusting
  • 25g Butter
  • 300g mixed Wild Mushrooms or just one type, cleaned and sliced
  • 25g Parmesan, finely grated
  • Small handful Parsley Leaves, chopped
  • 1 Garlic Clove, finely chopped
  • 1 Egg, beaten



  1. Roll the pastry out on a floured surface and cut out 4 circles, about 15cm wide. Leave to chill on a lined baking tray in the fridge.


  1. Heat oven to 200C/fan 180C/gas 6. Heat a large frying pan until hot, then add the butter and fry the mushrooms for 5 minutes until there is no liquid left in the pan. Season, then take off the heat and mix mushrooms with the Parmesan, Parsley, and Garlic.


  1. Score a 1cm border around the edge of each tart. Spoon the mushrooms into the center circle. Brush the edge with beaten egg,


  1. Bake the tarts for 20 minutes until puffed up and golden. Serve immediately.

UntitledHere we go again!  Another football season to endure!  But it doesn’t have to be that way this year.  You have things you enjoy doing, right? Revamp the way you view football.

While he’s jumping up and down screaming at the television all weekend long, take the opportunity to do some things you like to do.  Out of ideas?  Here’s a list we compiled that will keep you busy from pre-season all the way to the Super Bowl!  In fact, you may even be disappointed when football season ends!

  • Go shopping. No need to be in a rush.  The game could very well go into overtime.  We promise…he’s too concerned with the score to worry about how much time you’re spending at the mall.  So go ahead and hit up all the sales!


  • Get in some gym time! Haven’t had time to take that spin class your friend has been telling you about? Go ahead and give it a shot.


  • Take advantage of your free time and enjoy a picnic-for-one in the park! Make a day of it.  You can even take a book to read.  Sit back and relax.  You deserve the “me” time!


  • Sit outside and watch the sunset with your favorite glass of wine. Now that’s therapeutic!
